Is your question, can I get insurance in my name if the car is registered in my mom’s? In Ct you can get insurance through any company you want, however the name on the registration and insurance must match. You could then be listed on the insurance policy as another driver of the car. Hope this helps.
If the car is in your mom’s name, she has to insure it. If she insures it, you need to be a named driver on the policy. You can’t insure something you don’t own. If you want to insure it buy it from her or have her give it to you. Either way, the name on the insurance policy must match the name on the title & registration. It will probably actually be cheaper for her to insure it – one way, if she has another car she insures, she puts it on the same policy & there will be multicar credit (20%-25% off each car). Or, if that is the only car & you are both drivers on the policy, if you are a youthful driver (under 25 for women, under 30 for men), you would be considered occasional & that is a lower rate than primary driver (it doesn’t matter for your mom unless she has a bad driving record).
Your mom insures the car and lists you as a primary driver. The premeium rate will be determined by your age, sex, driving record, credit score, and other factors.
If your mother’s car is currently registered, then she should already have insurance. And trust me, if your mother already has an insurance policy then the insurance company already knows about you and the fact that you are of driving age.
So you will not need your own separate insurance policy. Then only way you would need your own insurance policy is if your mother’s car isn’t insured.
