Really up to you….you can call your agent and ask how much the rate will go up and then make your decision….3K that’s quite a hit…
Why would you put insurance on a car, and then not use the insurance to cover a loss when needed? If you do it yourself do you know how to word the receipt so they can’t come back and claim more, or claim that was only a partial payment? Your insurance company does.
But, your choice.
Does he have any points? It will raise his rate by at least 30% for three years.If anything else happens during that time is even more.
Pay for the damage and don’t leave a trail.
The other party will also be entitled to a rental car while his is being fixed and could claim injuries.
Turn it into your insurance company and let them handle it. That’s what insurance is for.
Tell your son that he will have to get a job and pay you how ever much your insurance goes up. It will provide an excellent learning opportunity for him. And – since he will have to pay for this and any future insurance increases he causes (accidents -tickets etc).- he’ll probably be a little more careful when he drives.
